Guide — GEO SEO

GEO SEO: being visible in AI answers

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — often written GEO SEO — is the work of making a brand findable, readable and citable in the answers that AI assistants generate. This guide explains what it is, how it differs from SEO, and what actually helps.

  1. 01

    What GEO SEO is

When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or a search engine's AI overview, the answer is composed on the spot from a set of sources: websites, documentation, directories, reviews, articles. Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of making sure your brand is among those sources — and that it is described accurately when it is.

It is closely related to answer engine optimisation (AEO): the two terms cover largely the same ground. The common idea is that the unit of visibility is no longer a ranked link, but a citation inside a generated answer.

Contrary to what a lot of content on the subject suggests, there is no trick that forces an assistant to recommend you. The work is less spectacular: make your facts clear, consistent and easy to quote.

  2. 02

GEO vs SEO: what actually changes

Traditional SEO works on matching: a page is indexed, ranked for a query, and the user picks a result. With an AI answer, the model reads several sources and composes one response. Your brand can appear as a mention, a recommendation or a cited source — without any click.

The metrics change accordingly. Instead of positions and click-through rates, the meaningful measurements are: for which questions does the brand appear, how is it described, and are those descriptions accurate?

That also changes how content should be written. A page that ranks well but speaks only in marketing terms gives an assistant nothing to quote. Content that states facts plainly — what the service is, for whom, at what stage, with what limits — is easier to reuse correctly.

  3. 03

    What AI assistants actually read

Assistants draw on a wide and partly unpredictable set of sources: your own site, structured data, comparison sites, directories, press coverage, reviews, documentation and community discussions. You cannot control all of it, which is exactly why consistency matters.

The types of content most often cited are the ones that answer a question in a self-contained way: definitions, explanations, comparisons, guides with concrete numbers, and pages where an entity is clearly described — who it is, what it does, where it operates.

A good part of GEO SEO therefore happens outside your pages: checking how third-party sources describe you, and correcting what is wrong or missing where you can.

  4. 04

    What helps in practice

Nothing exotic. The practices that make a brand citable are mostly editing discipline, applied consistently:

    • Answer questions in self-contained blocks

A section that fully answers one question, under a heading that states it, is easier for a model to lift into an answer than a long undivided text.

    • Make facts verifiable

Dates, figures, scope, limitations: state them plainly, and make sure they match everywhere — your site, your profiles, your listings.

    • Clarify the entity

One name, one clear description of what you do. If a model cannot tell what you are, it will not represent you.

    • Structure the content

Clear headings, lists, tables and FAQ sections are not decoration; they are the format assistants read most easily.

    • Keep the SEO foundations

Fast pages, clean structure, correct metadata: what makes a site crawlable also makes it readable. GEO adds a layer; it does not replace SEO.

  5. 05

    What to expect

Being cited in an AI answer is never guaranteed. It depends on the question, the competition and the sources available. What GEO work changes is the odds: a brand whose facts are clear, consistent and quotable is simply easier to represent correctly.

Results are measured where the change is observable: the questions where the brand appears, and the accuracy of how it is described. It moves over weeks, not days — which is why it is treated as ongoing work rather than a one-off fix.
